Hofstra steals first win from UMaine Pride pull out victory in final minute

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Maine grabbed a late lead but committed two turnovers during a 16-second span in the final minute Tuesday night as Hofstra University pulled out a 60-56 women’s basketball victory at the Mack Sports Complex.

It was Hofstra’s first victory over UMaine in 18 meetings.

Coach Cindy Blodgett’s Black Bears slipped to 2-6 with their second straight loss heading into Sunday’s nonleague contest at Harvard.

Tuesday’s game featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, but UMaine was unable to execute with the game on the line.

Junior guard Amanda Tewksbury had given the Bears a 56-55 lead when she hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining. UMaine got the ball back after a Hofstra miss and called timeout with 51 seconds left, but Brittany Boser turned the ball over and committed her fifth foul.

Natty Fripp sank two free throws to give the Pride (4-3) the lead for good with 45 seconds to play, then Jess Fuller stole the ball from UMaine point guard Kristin Baker of Bingham 16 seconds later.

Baker’s ensuing foul led to two Fuller foul shots that made it 59-56 and Tanna Ross missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left.

Tewksbury sparked UMaine with a season-high 16 points, while freshman center Samantha Baranowski contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Baker (four assists) and Ross each added eight points and four rebounds.

The Bears, who shot 6-for-14 from 3-point range, committed 22 turnovers, while Hofstra had 20.

Fuller registered a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Sam Brigham netted 13 points and handed out five assists for Hofstra, which shot 43 percent from the field and outrebounded UMaine 38-33.
