Alzheimer’s workshop to aid families, friends

BANGOR – Families and friends of people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia are invited to attend a free workshop Dec. 16 in Bangor.

The event, hosted by the Maine chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, will focus on providing personal care, handling finances, ensuring safety, improving communication, coping with anger and other aspects of caring for someone with dementia.

“Families struggle so hard with trying to figure it all out,” said Darlene Field of the Maine Alzheimer’s Association. The realities of caring for a loved one with dementia can be overwhelming, she said, “especially when it’s an elderly spouse.” The workshop will discuss the importance of caregivers tending to their own well-being while caring for the person with dementia.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Bangor Public Library. Light refreshments will be available, but participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Pre-registration is required; call 800-272-3900.

The event is not intended for professional caregivers.
