Total U.S. energy use

Total energy use in the United States is as follows: Petroleum, 40 percent; natural gas, 24 percent; coal, 23 percent; nuclear, 8 percent; renewables, 7 percent. The renewable component (7 percent of the total) breaks down as follows: hydro, 36 percent; biomass, 53 percent; geothermal, 5 percent; wind, 5 percent; solar, 1 percent. Hydro and biomass are the largest contributors to the renewable energy use. The total energy contributed from solar, wind and geothermal sources is less than 1 percent of total energy use.
