Fourth quarter rally keys JB win Wetherbee, Smith help eliminate FA

BANGOR – Billy Wetherbee ran for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries to help lead the John Bapst Crusaders past Foxcroft Academy 41-22 in an LTC Class C football semifinal Saturday at Cameron Stadium.

The Crusaders advanced to this weekend’s LTC final at Bucksport against the Golden Bucks.

Derek Smith completed nine of 22 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing two interceptions. Chase Huckestein caught two 48-yard TD passes and ran for another score as the Crusaders scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to rally from a 14-7 deficit.

John Bapst gained 474 total yards on 29 rushing plays and 22 pass plays.

For the visiting Ponies, Ian Champeon ran for one touchdown and 74 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Stroud completed eight of 14 passes for 118 yards, a touchdown and one interception. Stetson Bowden returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

The Ponies will not advance beyond the semifinal round for the first time since 2000.
