Thunderstorms leave Mainers without power

AUGUSTA – Violent thunderstorms left thousands of Mainers without electrical service Wednesday night as high winds sent tree limbs toppling into power lines.

Central Maine Power reported more than 6,400 customers without power, about half of them in the Portland area. Other hard-hit areas included Lewiston and Bridgton.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Bangor Hydro-Electric said more than 840 customers were affected, nearly all of them in Hancock County. But Bangor Hydro officials said service had been completely restored by Wednesday night.
