Orono woman gets service award

BANGOR – Cynthia Smith of Orono, administrative coordinator for Rosscare, is the recipient of the 2008 Excellence in Volunteer Administration Award given by the Maine Commission for Community Service. Smith received the award during the governor’s Volunteer Service Awards ceremony recently in the Hall of Flags in Augusta.

Smith was chosen by the review committee for her extraordinary service to Rosscare programs and the many lives she has touched throughout the years.

Smith has shown excellence in her role as director of the Telecare Program, a free daily telephone reassurance service to elders living alone in the Bangor region. The Telecare Program reaches out to aging community members who are at risk of isolation and depression.

Smith’s commitment to maintain a strong daily telephone reassurance program has resulted in a dedicated group of 15 volunteers to cover the weekday program calls. Some 100 local aging community members receive a call each weekday.

Amy Cotton, director of Rosscare, said, “We are so proud of Cynthia. She

has provided outstanding leadership and support to her dedicated volunteer staff

and is always focused on improving the quality of life for the aging community members we serve. Her administrative oversight has been a key reason Telecare has thrived.”

Smith’s volunteer commitment does not end with Rosscare, but reaches into other aspects of the community. She frequently volunteers at local senior assisted living facilities helping with activities such as beauty makeovers, community outings and holiday parties.
