Moran, Lee help Saint Joseph’s top Husson

BANGOR – Former Hampden Academy standout Pat Moran was one of several Saint Joseph’s College Monks enjoying a homecoming during Monday’s nonconference baseball game against Husson College at the Winkin Baseball Complex.

And with one swing of the bat, Moran helped make the team’s ride home to Standish a pleasant one, too.

Moran’s three-run triple to center field with two outs in the fifth inning keyed a six-run rally that snapped a 2-2 tie and led the Monks to a 13-4 victory over the Eagles.

“It’s nice to be home and have people come see me play,” said Moran, who transferred to Saint Joseph’s last spring from the University of Maine.

The Monks scored 10 two-out runs to improve to 16-11. Husson fell to 9-17.

“We had a rough inning defensively in the fourth [leading to two unearned runs] but we bounced right back in the fifth,” said Saint Joseph’s coach Will Sanborn. “That was the turning point.”

Husson freshman righthander Kyle Leeman of Bangor had overcome a shaky first inning (two runs) and had retired nine of the previous 10 hitters until Brian Schools triggered the decisive rally by lining a two-out single to right.

Luke Enman walked and Ben Grant-Roy, after falling behind 0-2, worked another walk.

Moran then drilled a 1-1 pitch high off the center-field fence to clear the bases.

“I’m not sure what the pitch was. It was some kind of off-speed pitch. It was up in the zone,” said Moran.

Husson catcher Nick Arthers said “I think it was a curve that stayed up in the zone and he took advantage of it.”

“That was the big hit of the inning,” said Saint Joseph’s second baseman Schools.

Moran’s former Hampden Academy teammate Ian Lee lined a single past Leeman’s glove to drive in Moran and, following a Travis Adams double, Eric LaBatte ripped a long two-run double to left-center to chase Leeman.

Husson got two back in the bottom of the fifth on Jeff Miller’s RBI triple to right-center and Chris Maguire’s run-scoring fielder’s choice.

Saint Joseph’s answered with a two-out run in the sixth on two walks and two hit batsmen at the expense of freshman reliever Ryan Walker. And the Monks added two more in the seventh on Enman’s two-out home run to right.

They added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Freshman righthander Mason Roberge hurled five innings of six-hit, four-run (two earned) baseball to pick up his third win in four decisions. He struck out three and walked two.

Gardiner’s Mike Burdin threw two innings of scoreless relief with Somesville’s Andrew Pooler and Gorham’s Schools each throwing a scoreless inning.

“Their pitchers threw strikes and kept us off-balance,” said Arthers.

Adams had three hits to pace Saint Joseph’s 16-hit attack with Wade Oliver, Schools, Grant-Roy and LaBatte collecting two apiece.

Dennis Graham had two hits for Husson.

Husson pitchers issued nine walks and hit three batters.

“Our pitchers didn’t show up today. You aren’t going to win any ballgames giving up 10 two-out runs. [Our pitchers] have got to finish off innings,” said Husson coach Jason Harvey.
