LINCOLN – Town Manager Glenn Aho will have a new job come June.
The Auburn City Council voted 6-1 on Monday night to pay Aho $103,000 annually, City Clerk Mary Lou Mango said Tuesday.
Auburn City Councilor Robert Hayes was the dissenting voter, arguing not against Aho’s hiring but challenging him and the council to unite in a common plan to improve the city.
“It’s a great honor to accept such a position of trust as Auburn’s city manager,” Aho said Tuesday. “[At present] I am working on an exit transition for Lincoln while also contemplating an entrance transition for Auburn.”
Auburn city officials confirmed the hiring last Wednesday. Aho, 39, of Lincoln earns about $70,000 as Lincoln’s manager, his job for 13 years.
Lincoln’s Town Council said it could not match Auburn’s offer. Auburn is Maine’s fourth largest city with a population of 23,203. Lincoln’s is about 5,200.
Councilors are mulling whether to appoint an interim town manager to replace Aho when he leaves.
Aho said he will leave the town in the best shape possible. He was meeting this week with town department managers to discuss the town’s 2008-09 budget and the status of many of the town’s unfinished projects.
“I am going to focus on the budget first. That’s my foremost priority,” Aho said. “The department managers are all capable of working independently from me and they all have managerial systems in place so they can continue to progress … They are very capable of maintaining [all services] throughout this transition.”
