NEWPORT – Selectmen held an emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon to count the votes for the write-in candidates for two three-year terms on the board of trustees for the Newport Sanitary District.
Although the votes were cast Friday, March 7, the write-ins for the sanitary district seats were not counted. They were on a back of a form, explained moderator and election warden Phil Brown, and therefore were inadvertently overlooked.
“They have to be tallied in the presence of the selectmen,” Town Manager James Ricker said, “so we had to call the special meeting.”
After the tallies were added, it appeared the two seats will be filled by Matthew Brann, with two votes, and Dennis Dow, with three votes. Several people had one vote each.
Selectmen also reappointed Allen Graves to the SAD 48 board for one year.
