Shots fired near home; passing driver charged

MOUNT CHASE – A driver apparently upset with a Mount Chase homeowner allegedly fired shots near the Shin Pond Road home while driving by on Wednesday evening.

Maine State Police Sgt. David McPherson said the incident at the Charles LaBelle home occurred around 9 p.m.

Kenneth Lane, 23, hometown unavailable, had driven by the house at the time of the incident and allegedly fired shots while he was driving, according to McPherson.

No one was injured.

Deputy Peter Stone of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call to assist and met the Lane vehicle a short time later on the Shin Pond Road. He eventually was able to stop Lane on the Baileyville Road.

Upon arrival, Trooper Tim Saucier found Lane to be cooperative but “highly intoxicated.” A Browning semi-automatic 10-gauge shotgun and four spent shells were seized. They were found inside Lane’s truck, authorities said.

Police said Lane admitted having fired shots into the air near the LaBelle dwelling because he was upset with Charles LaBelle, but told investigators he did not intend to harm anyone and was just “blowing off steam.”

There was no visible damage to the LaBelle home or other items on the property.

Lane has been charged with terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct with a firearm, both of which are Class C felonies punishable by up to five years in prison. He also was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Lane’s vehicle was impounded and more charges are possible, according to McPherson.
