Plum Creek support

I am writing on behalf of Raft Maine, an association of seven professional white-water rafting outfitters, in support of the Plum Creek concept plan.

As supporters, we believe the plan offers substantial benefits in the areas of conservation, wildlife management, habitat protection, sustainable forestry, tourism, recreation, job growth, enhanced infrastructure development and overall economic growth.

The nearly 400,000-acre easement stands as one of the key elements in the plan. By establishing this easement, we will be promoting the protection and perpetuation of critical and diverse habitat, enhancing wildlife management, facilitating future research and promoting sustainable eco-tourism. The present economic value of the conservation easement is substantial and will continue to pay dividends to Maine citizens for years to come. Better yet, Maine citizens do not have to pay the acquisition costs for the easement.

The plan will attract more tourists, jobs, money and economic development to the region and state. Tourism is a growing and important aspect of Maine’s economy, and this plan invests in the future of tourism in Maine. Residual tourism benefits will be realized throughout Maine.

It has committed time, money and equipment in developing ITS and ATV trails systems. Plum Creek has been a valuable corporate citizen.

Plum Creek’s plan exhibits the type of investment we want to attract and promote in Maine.
