Fire seen from I-95 destroys Carmel home

CARMEL – A two-story house on Hinckley Hill Road appeared to have been demolished Sunday night in a blaze that could be seen from Interstate 95.

No one was reported injured in the fire.

The name of the homeowner was not available by 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The fire was reported about 6:15 p.m. to the Penobscot Regional Communications Center as a fully engaged structure fire.

Seven fire departments went to the scene of the blaze at 228 Hinckley Hill Road, near the Newburgh Road intersection, with tanker trucks so firefighters would have enough water to fight the blaze.

Hinckley Hill Road runs parallel to I-95 along a ridge. Some drivers in southbound vehicles pulled off onto the shoulder to get a better look at the fire.

Penobscot County sheriff’s Deputy Garrit McKee, one of the first officials on the scene, said the flames were shooting 20 to 30 feet above the roofline when he arrived to handle traffic.

About 30 minutes after the fire was reported, flames could be seen lapping at the eaves at the front of the house. Firefighters on the ground knelt in the snow to brace their hoses and directed water into the second floor of the house through knocked-out windows.

The temperature hovered just above freezing in the early evening hours, so freezing water did not appear to be a problem.

Carmel Fire Chief Joseph Pelletier said that he expected firefighters would be on the scene until at least midnight.

He said a decision about a possible cause of the fire and whether the fire marshal might be called in to investigate would not be made before today.

McKee, who is assigned to patrol Carmel, said it was the third fire this month reported on Hinckley Hill Road. The other two fires caused minimal damage, he said.

An old unattached barn behind the house and an above-ground swimming pool appeared to have been unscathed by the fire.

A “For Sale by Owner” sign in front of the house listed a price of $165,000.

Firefighters from Carmel, Newburgh, Hampden, Etna, Hermon, Stetson and Levant went to the scene of the blaze.
