Mayo ambulance to move to new home

DEXTER – Mayo Regional Hospital soon will vacate the small town-owned ambulance garage for a larger hospital-owned facility on Route 7 on the outskirts of the village.

Town Manager Judy Doore told the Town Council on Thursday that the hospital plans to move either later this month or in early January.

The hospital, which purchased the former Kaufman Motor Co. property, has renovated and added on to the existing building to serve as a regional base for Mayo Emergency Medical Services in the Dexter and Corinna regions.

Doore also noted that the hospital had taken delivery of a new $130,000 ambulance that will be housed in Dexter.

At Doore’s suggestion, the council agreed to look into officially recognizing the late Harold Alfond. Doore said Alfond, former owner of Dexter Shoe Co., was the largest employer in the community for many years and suggested he should be remembered locally for his kindness and generosity.

The Town Council learned that Linda Clukey, human services director, and her assistant Jean Edgerly were leaving their positions. Clukey will retire and Edgerly is moving from the area. The two positions will be combined in the future.

The council accepted a gift of $1,200 from Penobscot Lodge 39, AF&AM for movie night expenses at the town hall.
