Vote no on gambling

Vote no on casinos in Washington County. This idea will raise taxes for the average taxpayer, via greater road upkeep (on our already poor roads) and increase law enforcement needs. Casinos give back nothing to the average citizen. Gambling brings increased drug and alcohol problems (already high here).

Low-income county folks would waste more of their hard-earned money on gambling.

Supposedly, the proceeds (profits?) would go to selected educational activities. This scenario is hypocritical and morally wrong. If gambling money is used to fund education, then we have a sick society.

A casino would create very few jobs. There are many good job openings in the county, but nobody applies. Contact the Career Center. The people who want to work are working. Those who are not working never will.

Washington County is not a poor county. Banks and businesses are expanding. New businesses are starting up. Many people are driving new or quite new vehicles. We should build on what works and not create a white elephant.

A casino flies in the face of the Passamaquoddys’ traditions and heritage. If this casino farce becomes reality, then we have a hotel, convention center, and whatever else sitting vacant one-half of the year. Remember the 400th anniversary of St. Croix Island – what happened to all the people that were to come?

The pro-casino people need to have a reality check and focus on the many things that currently work.

Vote no casinos in Washington County.
