County gets dividend for safe driving habits

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The safe driving habits of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department again have meant dollars for the county.

For 10 of the past 12 years, the county has earned a dividend check from the Maine Municipal Association’s Risk Management Services, which handles the county’s insurance.

This year, as is typical in most of the years, the county received a check for $1,437. Those funds are placed into the county’s general fund.

“It just shows some mature and competent driving on behalf of the officers,” Piscataquis County Sheriff John Goggin said Tuesday.

Each year, Risk Management Services examines the records of those agencies under its umbrella, Goggin said. Agencies that have no accidents or claims receive a dividend check. The check is usually presented during the annual Maine county commissioners meeting, he said.

Goggin said he typically gets ribbed about the recurring award at these meetings. At one session, he was asked whether the county had any cruisers. Goggin said he replied, “No, the county uses 10-speed bicycles.”
