SULLIVAN – A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, for a couple who were killed in a car accident last week that left their three children orphaned.
Cory Openshaw, 30, and Stacey Collins, 32, both of Sullivan, will be remembered at a ceremony at Mountain View School in Sullivan. Their families have invited members of the public to come and celebrate their lives.
The couple died in a two-vehicle accident last Friday night on Route 1A just north of downtown Ellsworth. A 1993 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Openshaw was heading south toward Ellsworth when it drifted across the centerline and collided head-on with another SUV, a 2003 Dodge Durango.
The couple’s three children, aged 2, 7 and 10, were riding in the back seat of Openshaw’s vehicle and each suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.
All five in the Suburban were wearing seat belts, police said.
The driver of the other vehicle, Alberta Farthing, 42, of Holden, was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
A fund has been set up through Union Trust Bank to benefit the three children who lost their parents.
Additionally, the Sullivan Fire Department’s women’s auxiliary is hosting a benefit supper and auction for Oct. 13.
