Public safety funding

After reading a recent BDN article telling us about the severe shortage of state troopers, I once again wonder why our elected officials don’t understand the importance of public safety and the ramifications of not providing proper funding to assure our state of that protection.

Let’s ponder some possible solutions to this vexing problem. The most obvious answer is to place public safety as the top priority in budgeting and fund it accordingly. The worst possible solution would be an increase in taxes to cover this expense since we all know you can never tax your way out of any budget deposit.

The way I see it, we can reduce a number of programs the government has no business funding or we can do everything we can to stimulate economic activity. Our Legislature never seems to want to embrace the former and it would shock me greatly to see them do the latter.

I certainly hope I live long enough to see all our public safety personnel receive the funding necessary to provide that service, but unfortunately there is little indication our government agrees with my desire. Perhaps divine intervention will keep us safe, or not!
