Willimantic to hold town meeting Monday

WILLIMANTIC – Forty-six articles, including a conflict of interest ordinance, will need voter attention at the annual town meeting next week.

The town meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the town hall.

“Basically, what we’re trying to do is hold the line but also put some money aside for capital improvements,” Selectman Susan Bennett said Thursday.

Bennett was notified by Maine Revenue Services on Thursday that the town’s tree growth reimbursement check would be mailed out on Sept. 1. The town will receive $24,148, a $9,000 increase from last year.

“This is very good news as it will allow us to build up our surplus, which was totally depleted in 2005,” Bennett said.

Because of some conflicts in the past, residents will be asked to act on a conflict of interest ordinance that prohibits any municipal official from bidding on a contract with the town while the official is in office or within 12 months afterward.

The ordinance also includes immediate family members of the town official.
