Three County towns plan summer festivals

ISLAND FALLS – They are three towns planning a series of different events during separate festivities this weekend, but all of the communities have the same goal – enabling residents and visitors to have fun.

Island Falls, Monticello and Danforth are putting on summer festivals. Organizers in each of the towns have scheduled a host of activities to entertain revelers.

In Island Falls, the annual Summerfest gala kicks off today. The fete will last 10 days and will feature everything from fireworks and a fishing derby to parades and petting zoos.

The theme of this year’s event is “northern Maine fiesta,” and the first day of Summerfest will include a fiesta at the Katahdin Federal Credit Union and a fiesta DJ dance at Up North Grill later this evening. A fireworks display will light up the sky at 9:30 p.m.

Other events include concerts, community cookouts, a craft fair, trade show and a road race.

In Monticello, the community’s annual Fun Days celebration also begins today and wraps up on Sunday. The festivities begin with a roast beef supper tonight, starting at 4 p.m. at the Monticello Fire Department. A men’s beauty pageant will follow, and the winner will win the title of “Mr. Monticello.”

Other activities – including games, a dance at the Monticello Fish and Game Club, a firefighters’ muster and lawn mower races will be held throughout the weekend.

Today also is opening day of the East Grand Summerfest in Danforth. The 10th annual event is sponsored by the Greater East Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Festivities – including fireworks, a grand parade, an antique car show and games and activities for children and adults – will continue until the celebration ends Saturday evening.
