Man accused of smuggling drugs freed on bail

BANGOR – A Caribou man accused of smuggling OxyContin into the country at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield has been released on $10,000 unsecured bail provided he live with his parents and stay off drugs.

Andrew “Shorty” Adams, 23, was released late Monday after appearing earlier in the day before U.S. District Judge John Woodcock in federal court in Bangor.

He was arrested Sunday in a parking lot of the country club with 145 oxycodone pills in a plastic bag that was inside a golf ball sleeve, according to court documents.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million.

A date for his next court appearance has not been set.

Adams came to the attention of federal officials when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents spotted the car of a Canadian man suspected of drug smuggling in the parking lot of the country club, according to court documents.

Adams allegedly told agents he called the Canadian man to play golf and to bring Adams some OxyContin pills. Adams told agents, according to court documents, that he exchanged $600 for the pills between the fourth and sixth holes on the golf course.

The country club has parking lots on both the American and Canadian sides of the border, with all golf holes located in Canada.

The Canadian, who has not been charged in federal court in Bangor, apparently entered and left the golf course through the parking lot on the American side. Typically, the Bangor Daily News does not name suspects who have not been charged.

He was taken into custody by Fort Fairfield Police about 8:30 p.m. Sunday as he left the golf course, then was turned over to ICE for questioning, according to court documents.

More than $2,000 in U.S. currency allegedly was found on the Canadian man. He told investigators that Adams showed him some pills and asked if the Canadian could get some of them for him, according to court documents.

No further information about the Canadian man’s status was available Tuesday.
