Not guilty plea entered in theft of U.S. flags

WISCASSET – A West Bath woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to tearing American flags off the Westport Island Bridge in Wiscasset. She will stand trial July 5.

Heather Willoughby-Bertrand, 23, made her initial appearance in District Court on charges of theft and criminal mischief. She is accused of snapping off the flags and putting them in her car.

Kimberly and Murlyn “Bud” Greenleaf of Westport Island, parents of a son deployed last year to Iraq, had put up the flags as a show of support for U.S. troops serving overseas.

Willoughby-Bertrand said previously that one of the flags blew onto her windshield during a rainstorm and she took them all down in the interests of safety.

The flags had been torn down and replaced five times. The Greenleafs said that since Willoughby-Bertrand was caught, the flags have remained undisturbed.
