Rangeley man arrested after police standoff

RANGELEY – A local man apparently shot himself and was arrested after a standoff at his home Thursday afternoon, a state police spokesman said.

Charles Brown, 53, surrendered to police about 2:15 p.m. in the driveway of the home, according to information from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Three investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Rangeley police had gone to Brown’s home earlier Thursday to arrest him on an arson charge.

Once investigators entered his home on Summer Road, they heard a gunshot and exited the house.

They called for the Maine State Police tactical team to assist them.

Brown suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

The fire that Brown is being charged with destroyed a one-story building in Coplin Plantation in the early hours of May 3.

The building contained a small apartment and a garage.
