Cancer awareness

In a recent article, “Specialty license plate eyed for breast cancer” (BDN, March 23), Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, introduced a bill for a special pink license plate to support breast cancer awareness. The first thing you may presume is that I, being a guy, who by the way has had radical prostate surgery back in 1995 – a survivor you can say – am suggesting a special blue license plate supporting men’s prostate cancer awareness.

Us tough guys don’t step forward as the women do but that is the men’s mistake when statistics show that almost as many men die of prostate cancer as women die of breast cancer, but you are made aware all the time of breast cancer. No, I am not against a special pink license plate for women’s breast cancer awareness, it’s just that men should be made more aware and for some of them to speak up – maybe more than “some of them” to speak up!
