Heartwise plans events for February

DOVER-FOXCROFT – A variety of activities are planned during American Heart Month in February by Heartwise, the cardiac rehabilitation program at Mayo Regional Hospital.

There will be an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, to mark the 10th anniversary of Heartwise’s Phase II program, designed for patients who have experienced a recent cardiac event. Heartwise recorded 1,352 Phase II patient visits in 2006. Its Phase III program, which started 17 years ago and is designed for maintenance following a cardiac event, had 1,460 patients visits last year.

During Cardiac Rehab Week, Feb. 11-17, Heartwise will offer fasting lipid profile and blood sugar testing on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 12-13. Tests are scheduled from 6:30-10:30 a.m. on both days, on a walk-in basis.

Throughout the month, Heartwise will promote the importance of a proper diet in preventing heart disease by labeling more than 2,000 items of Heart Healthy foods at participating supermarkets in the Penquis area. Stores cooperating in the effort include Goulette’s IGA in Guilford, Shaw’s in Dover-Foxcroft, Edward’s SuperMarket in Dover-Foxcroft, Sav-A-Lot, Bud’s Shop ‘n Save and P&L Country Market in Dexter, and the Milo Farmers Union.

Also throughout the month, Heartwise will provide information on preventing heart disease with daily messages on WDME radio and with a display table in the front lobby at Mayo Regional Hospital.

Heartwise will participate on Feb. 2 in “Go Red for Women,” the American Heart Association’s effort to increase awareness of heart disease and stroke – the leading cause of death for women. On that day people from around Maine will be wearing red to focus attention on cardiovascular disease.

Several educational sessions have been scheduled during February by Heartwise. There will be a Basic Life Support instructor course at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, and a Heartsaver first aid course at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. Two CPR classes are scheduled, the first for health care providers at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, and the second for the general public at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22.

All classes will be at the Heartwise office, located in Suite 400 of the Mayo medical office building. For more information, or to register for any of the education programs, call Nina Pratt at Heartwise, 564-4207.
