Greenbush man indicted on 2 counts of assault

BANGOR – A Greenbush man who four years ago shot and wounded a home intruder was indicted Tuesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for allegedly stabbing two Milford women in their home six weeks ago.

Larry Leighton, 61, was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated criminal trespass.

He allegedly burst through the front door of the home of Violet DeCarlos, 31, and Susan Swoboda, 41, on Greenfield Road around 1 p.m. Nov. 18 and started swinging a 3-inch knife, according to the women.

The women fought back, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

During the scuffle, Swoboda grabbed a rolling pin and hit Leighton on the head, which threw him off balance, DeCarlos said the day after the alleged attack.

DeCarlos said she then pushed him out of the way, and he crashed into a glass coffee table, breaking it.

As a result of the assault, DeCarlos said, she suffered six or seven puncture wounds and a gash on the back of her head that required 10 stitches. Swoboda received five stitches for a puncture on her ribs and four stitches for a cut on her shoulder, DeCarlos said.

Leighton remained Tuesday in the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety.

If convicted, Leighton faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000 on each assault count alone.

In September 2002, Leighton, a former Marine, shot and wounded in the leg one of two men who broke into his home after a dispute over conversations Leighton allegedly had with the man’s girlfriend.
