Northport woman charged with OUI

NORTHPORT – A local woman faces several charges after allegedly destroying some household furnishings Thursday during an argument with a male companion, then chasing after him when he left the home and crashing her car into a ditch.

Mary E. Steele, 56, of High Street was charged with operating while under the influence of intoxicants, domestic criminal mischief and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Waldo County Chief Deputy Robert Keating said Steele and her companion got into an argument during which she broke some household items. When the man left to avoid further confrontation, Steele followed him in her vehicle only to lose control at the end of Pound Hill Road and wind up in a ditch. Damage to her 2006 Honda Accord was estimated at $3,000. Her companion drove Steele home and then reported the accident.

When Deputy Merl Reed arrived at the home he observed that Steele was under the influence and placed her under arrest. She was taken to Waldo County Jail and released on personal recognizance bail Friday morning.
