AUBURN – An Auburn man who admitted to police that he left a woman on the pavement after she fell from his motorcycle pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury.
John Ferland was indicted earlier this month in Androscoggin County Superior Court. The victim, Irene Douglas, 36, of Lewiston, died several days later.
Defense lawyer Leonard Sharon said Ferland left the scene early on July 22 only after being assured by others that they would call for an ambulance.
Ferland, who’d never been in trouble with the law, was doing a good deed by giving the woman a ride home from the Midnight Blues Club, Sharon said.
Ferland admitted to police that he and another man, Scott Soulard, left Douglas after a neighbor told them she would dial 911. No charges have been brought against Soulard, who is from Old Orchard Beach.
