I am pleased to read that the Bangor Daily News has chosen to express its editorial opposition to the TABOR initiative (BDN, Oct. 21-22). Your stand reflects good sense. However, as someone who works in public education and is also a lifelong Maine resident, I must admit that we definitely need a new approach to taxing and funding programs in Maine.
I believe it is critically important for us to maintain Maine’s commitment to quality education and other support services, but it is also vital that we make this state attractive to entrepreneurs, investors and new businesses. There is much to be done.
As a result of my concern for the future of Maine, I am voting for Barbara Merrill for governor. I have known her for more than four years and I respect her energy, her dedication, and most importantly her vision for a Maine that is fiscally responsible. She will be a leader who will challenge the status quo and will have the ideas, the creativity and the intelligence to get Maine moving.
It is time for a governor who will be fiscally responsible and dedicated to promoting the common good.
