I would like to respond to Senate Republican Leader Paul T. Davis’ op-ed (BDN, Oct. 20) in which he calls candidate Chandler Woodcock a Ronald Reagan Republican. If this is true and he wins the election for governor, may God help us all.
During Reagan’s presidency his failed economic policies (“Reaganomics”) doubled the national debt, had two years of double-digit unemployment and helped cause a major recession.
Reagan was probably responsible for more people living out of the backs of their station wagons than any other president we’ve ever had. Republicans always fail to mention that until an effort to raise taxes several times until they were actually more than the tax cuts, our economy could not recover. This effort was led by GOP senators like Bob Dole.
Americans actually paid more taxes after Reagan was elected than they did before. History also shows that Reagan’s wasteful overspending on defense really had little to do with the Berlin Wall coming down and the demise of the Soviet Union. If this is who the Republicans want to hold up as their hero then this is one independent who won’t be backing them.
