Employee lied about robbery, police say

WATERVILLE – A 20-year-old woman who reported being robbed at gunpoint while working at a McDonald’s restaurant has been charged with theft and filing a false report.

Police said Lisa Didas of Waterville went so far as to sit down with police to compose a sketch of the bearded man she said robbed her at the drive-through window on Oct. 3.

But police now say Didas was the one who stole the money and reported a robbery to cover up the crime.

Detective William Bonney said Didas told police she has a young child and is pregnant, but has no husband or child support and was desperate for money. She is accused of stealing more than $1,000 in cash from McDonald’s and concealing it to avoid detection.

“She’s pregnant, she’s got a 6-month-old child and she told me she can’t do it alone,” Bonney said. “She needs some help and this was kind of a last resort for her.”

Police Chief John Morris said Didas was charged with theft from a Hannaford supermarket a few days after she filed the robbery report.

Didas was charged with stealing a half-gallon of Allen’s coffee brandy and a liter of Southern Comfort liquor, Morris said.
