Gagnon leads Crusaders by Raiders in OT

HERMON – Miles Gagnon scored the third goal for John Bapst of Bangor in the second round of penalty kicks to lead the No. 1 Crusaders past No. 4 Winslow 2-1 in an Eastern Maine Class B boys soccer semifinal Wednesday.

After Gagnon’s score, the Black Raiders missed the would-be tying goal.

Jeff Sanford and Jon Gagnon converted second-round penalty kicks for 13-2-1 John Bapst.

Juan Loubier and Tyler Levasseur scored penalty kick goals in Winslow’s second-round attempt.

In the first penalty kick round, Tetter Lundquist, Jordan Myers, and Nick Hubbard scored for the Crusaders.

Matt Farrell, Josh LaBonte, and Jared Carnrick scored for Winslow.

Farrell scored an unassisted goal two minutes into the first half of regulation to give Winslow a 1-0 lead.

Hubbard tied it with 7:55 left in the first half on a Lundquist indirect kick for the Crusaders.

Chris Smith and Ethan Sale combined to block seven of 31 shots for John Bapst.

Levasseur made 10 saves on 26 shots for the Black Raiders.

Class A

Brunswick 5, Hampden 0

At Brunswick, Ryan Hamm scored a goal and assisted on another to lead No. 1 Brunswick past No. 4 Hampden Academy.

Kyle Sullivan, Corey Underwood, Matt Peabody, and Sam Kaplan added goals. Tom Williams had one save for 16-0 Brunswick’s 14th shutout.

Hampden finished with a 12-5 record.

Class C

Piscataquis 2, Houlton 0

At Guilford, Mike Wharff scored off a Roy Burdin assist about 10 minutes into the game to lead No. 5 Piscataquis over No. 9 Houlton.

Burdin added an unassisted goal with 11:34 left in the first half for the 11-4-1 Pirates. Ryan Martell blocked eight of 10 shots.

Eben Thompson made five saves on 12 shots for the 8-9 Shiretowners.

Dexter 3, Orono 0

At Dexter, Dan Beatham scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season 1:58 apart in the first half to lead No. 2 Dexter past No. 3 Orono.

Beatham converted a breakaway off a Rick Stewart through-ball with 13:01 remaining, then directed home an Aaron Woodman header off a David Wilkes corner.

Stewart capped the scoring in the second half off a Wilkes pass.

Chris Eastman made eight saves on 14 shots for the 11-2-3 Tigers, while Nate Peterson had five saves on 17 shots for Orono, which wound up 12-3-1.

Class D

Ashland 7, Shead 0

At Ashland, Carl Nemer scored two of his three goals in the first half to propel the top-seeded Hornets into the EM championship game.

Nemer scored in the first half off assists from Curtis Belanger and Jeremy Tarr, then posted a second-half goal off a Jesse Martin assist. Nick Gimbel posted a goal and an assist for 13-1-2 Ashland, while Tyler Cote, Isaac Ward (penalty kick), and Jake Paradis tallied one goal apiece.

Michael Condon had two assists, and Kevin Baker made seven saves on eight shots.

Craig Hastings made 12 saves on 19 shots for No. 13 Shead of Eastport, which finished 9-5-3.

Van Buren 3, Calvary Chapel 0

At Van Buren, Alex Martin scored two goals to help lift No. 2 Van Buren over No. 3 Calvary Chapel of Orrington.

Riley Lizotte scored a goal and provided an assist for the 14-0-2 Crusaders. Jon O’Hare had an assist, and Andrew Taylor stopped six of nine shots.

Beau Miller made nine saves on 15 shots for the Sabers.

Girls soccer

GSA 2, Madawaska 1

At Madawaska, Lexi Wessel’s unassisted second-half goal during a goalmouth scramble resulting from a free kick proved to be the game-winner as No. 3 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill upset No. 2 Madawaska.

Emily Peake scored in the first half off a Winslow Brokaw pass for the 11-3-2 Eagles, and Kayla Eaton finished with eight saves.

Nicole Daigle converted a penalty kick with 18:18 left in regulation for the 11-4-1 Owls, and Stephanie Nadeau finished with 11 saves.
