It certainly is not good news for the planet that our population passed 300 million and continues to grow at a rate that exceeds the rest of the industrialized world. Based on per capita consumption, we are already grossly overpopulated.
As a nation, we consume more resources than China’s 1.3 billion residents and 20 to 50 times more per person than Third World citizens. From energy and water use to house size and the number of vehicles per person, we surpass all other countries. And, shamefully, we are the biggest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, the primary cause of global warming.
Immigration is clearly responsible for a large portion of our population growth, but that’s only part of the story. According to a recent Associated Press article, many middle-class families are deciding to have three and four children simply because they can afford it.Apparently large families are one of America’s new status symbols.
It’s time to talk openly and honestly about family size and our need to reduce our birthrate. The rest of the world and our own children’s future can’t survive our “bigger is better” mentality.
