Clarke, Pickering spark Husson win Eagles blank MMA for 14th victory

CASTINE – Laura Clarke scored a first-half goal and Shelby Pickering added two in the second half as the Husson College Eagles recorded a 4-0 women’s soccer victory over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Tuesday.

Clark’s goal came at the 41:24 mark when she scored from a rebound after a corner kick. Pickering added the insurance goal at the 61:25 mark when she drove a 25-yard free kick high over the MMA defensive wall and into the top left corner of the net.

Husson outshot MMA 27-5 with Pickering firing eight shots on goal.

Samantha Homer added unassisted goal for the 14-3-1 Eagles when she drilled in a shot off a breakaway. Elissa Gordon notched an assist and Leah Drew made three saves.

Hillary Arris made 11 saves for 10-5-2 MMA.

Bowdoin 4, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, Ali Chase scored two goals and Ann Zeigler had a goal and an assist as Bowdoin College of Brunswick rolled by the University of Southern Maine.

Ivy Blackmore added a goal and Claire Cuttin tallied an assist for the 21-4 Polar Bears. Kat Popoff and Kelly Thomas recorded the shut out without making a save.

Meghan Ibar had 12 saves on 25 shots for the 5-11 Huskies.

Field hockey

Bowdoin 4, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, Hillary Hoffman scored two goals and Lindsay McNamara added a goal and an assist to lead Bowdoin over Southern Maine.

Tamlyn Frederick chipped in with a goal and Ashley Peterson, Julia King and Megan McCullough had an assist apiece. Kate Leonard and Emileigh Mercer combined to make two saves on five shots for the 12-1 Polar Bears.

Allie Hill tallied 10 saves on 24 shots for the 9-9 Huskies.

Men’s soccer

Bates 8, UM-Machias 0

At Lewiston, Greg Nelson, Ithai Schori and Rob Friedlander scored two goals apiece as Bates cruised past UMaine-Machias.

Brent Morin tallied a goal and two assists, and Oliver Fadly added a goal for the 7-5-1 Bobcats. Bates outshot UM-Machias 43-5. Rob Munro and Aaron Schleicher combined to make one save in the shutout.

Kellen Shaver made nine saves for the 6-9-1 Clippers.

Colby 8, Thomas 0

At Waterville, Teague Dugan tallied two goals and an assist as Colby rolled over Thomas.

Ben Wakana added a goal and an assist and Tyler Plourde had three assists for the 6-5-2 Mules. Scott Brown, Mike Baldwin, Jim Pilgrim and James Westhafer chipped in with a goal apiece, and Tom Milaschewski, Luc Bennett and Logan King notched an assist. Zak Starr and Dan Marden combined to make one save on three shots.

Russ Beckwith made seven saves on 38 shots for the Terriers.
