Truck rolls over after car hits it

CARMEL – A green pickup truck rolled off the side of Interstate 95 late Sunday afternoon after another vehicle lost control and hit the truck, state police said.

The accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. near the Carmel exit at mile marker 174, when a Toyota Camry driven by a 17-year-old boy from Bangor hit the pickup truck driven by Ronald McEwen, 23, of Solon. Each vehicle had a passenger.

According to state police, both vehicles were traveling north, the pickup in the travel lane and the Camry in the passing lane. The driver of the Camry wasn’t paying attention and drifted toward the right lane but corrected his direction by steering left. He lost control and started to fishtail, hitting the driver’s side of the pickup.

The truck drove off the right side of the interstate, struck a rock, rolled over once and landed right side up, according to police. The Camry came to a stop about 250 yards up the highway.

The Camry had only dents and a flat tire, but the pickup was a total loss, according to Trooper Michael Johnston.

Carmel fire and rescue went to the scene and took Nicholas Vanvliet, 28, of Winslow, the passenger in the pickup truck, to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment of minor head injuries, according to Johnston. No one else was taken to the hospital.

The 17-year-old, whose name police would not release because he is a minor, was charged with carrying passengers beyond his intermediate license restrictions, meaning that he had someone in the car other than an immediate family member, before his six-month waiting period was up.

He was also given a warning for changing his course of travel in an unsafe manner.
