McLaughlin lifts Brewer to upset win over Eagles

TOPSHAM – Reid McLaughlin scored the game-winning goal with 4:30 remaining in the game to lift No. 6 Brewer to a 2-1 Eastern Maine boys soccer quarterfinal victory over No. 3 Mount Ararat.

Shun Sasaki scored first for Brewer with a goal four minutes into the first half on a corner kick by Andrew Richardson. Chris Brady made seven saves on 10 shots for the 11-4-1 Witches.

Andrew Pelletier scored the tying-goal for Mount Ararat with 3:18 left in the first half. Brian Bousquet-Smith made 10 saves on 16 shots for the 11-2-2 Eagles.

Hampden 1, Erskine 0

At Hampden, Aaron Gilio scored off a pass from Logan Larabee with 2:51 left in the game to lift No. 4 Hampden by No. 12 Erskine Academy of South China.

Larabee centered the ball to Gilio, who booted it from about nine yards out before it hit the ground and went into the goal’s right corner. Cam Cox made four saves on four shots for the 12-4 winners.

Dan Cowing made six saves on 10 shots for 9-7 Erskine.

Class B

MCI 2, Presque Isle 0

At Presque Isle, Alex Sidelinger and Troy Murray scored a goal each as No. 7 Maine Central Institute shut out No. 2 Presque Isle.

Benson Bonsu made 19 saves on 22 shots for 8-5-3 Huskies.

Adam Kingsbury made four saves on seven shots for the 11-3-1 Wildcats.

Ellsworth 3, Camden Hills 0

At Ellsworth, Dem Katsiaficas scored a goal and assisted on another as No. 3 Ellsworth blanked No. 6 Camden Hills.

Luke Haskell and Taylor Wentworth tallied a goal apiece for the 13-1-1 Eagles. Alex Emeigh notched an assist and Greg Berry made nine saves on 14 shots.

Andy Brown stopped 13 of 26 shots for the 7-6-2 Windjammers.

Winslow 3, Caribou 1

At Winslow, Matt Farrell scored all three of his team’s goals as the fourth-seeded Black Raiders beat the No. 5 Vikings.

Farrell converted a penalty kick midway through the first half, then broke a 1-1 tie with a direct free kick less than nine minutes into the second half. He capped the scoring with a breakaway goal with 3:07 left.

Tyler Levasseur made four saves on eight shots for 10-2-3 Winslow.

Kyle Damboise scored off a Kyle Corrigan assist with 61/2 minutes to play in the first half for 8-7 Caribou. Chad McCarthy made four saves on 12 shots.

Class C

Houlton 2, Calais 1

At Calais, Jordan Gard scored the game-winning goal with 9:15 remaining in the game as No. 9 Houlton upset No. 1 and previously undefeated Calais.

Sam Carter netted the first goal for Houlton with 23:57 left in the first half. Eben Thompson made seven saves on 14 shots for the 8-8 Shiretowners.

John Deacon scored the tying-goal for Calais with 16:46 remaining in the game. Scott Geel stopped five of 16 shots for the 13-1-1 Blue Devils.

Dexter 3, George Stevens 1

At Dexter, Dan Beatham scored two goals to lead No. 2 Dexter by No. 10 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Aaron Woodman added a goal in the second half while David Wilks recorded two assists. Chris Eastman made six saves on 10 shots for the 10-2-3 Tigers.

Ryan Kurtz netted a goal for George Stevens off a pass from Steven Ensworth. Rashad Frazier stopped 12 of 29 shots for the 7-7-2 Eagles.

Orono 2, Penobscot Valley 1

At Orono, Lee Hecker converted the deciding penalty kick to give No. 3 Orono the win over No. 6 Penobscot Valley of Howland after neither team scored in the two 15-minute overtime periods.

Six minutes into the second half, Chris McConnon scored the first goal for Orono, assisted by Hosain Aghamosa. Seven minutes later, Ryan Ware scored an unassisted goal for Penobscot Valley to tie up the game.

Nate Peterson made six saves on seven shots for the 12-2-1 Red Riots, and Brian Harris saved 13 of 14 shots for the 9-4-3 Howlers.

Piscataquis 3, Central 1

At Corinth, Jared Robinson scored two goals as No. 5 Piscataquis held off No. 4 Central.

Mike Wharff netted a goal and John Billstone added an assist for the 10-4-1 Pirates of Guilford. Ryan Martel had 16 saves on 18 shots.

Jake Speed tallied a goal for the 6-5-4 Red Devils. Danny Kane recorded the assist. Charles Haney made 8 saves on 16 shots.

Class D

Shead 1, Woodland 0 (OT)

At Baileyville, A.J. Seeley scored the game-winner 3:33 into the first overtime as No. 13 Shead of Eastport downed No. 12 Woodland.

Craig Hastings made 18 saves on 24 shots for the 9-4-3 Tigers.

Todd Townsend recorded 15 saves on 19 shots for the 9-5-1 Dragons.

Calvary Chapel 4, Washburn 2

At Hampden, Luke Thomas scored three goals to lead No. 3 Calvary Chapel of Orrington by No. 11 Washburn.

Rosaire Veilleux tallied a goal and an assist while John Burke added an assist. Beau Miller made five saves on seven shots for the 13-3 Sabers.

Adam Thompson and Matt Connolly each had a goal for Washburn. Steven Pesut made 14 saves on 23 shots.

Western Maine

Class D

Greenville 3, Vinalhaven 1

At Greenville, Kyle Whitman, Richie Chilson and Corey Woodbury each tallied a goal as No. 4 Greenville downed No. 5 Vinalhaven.

Will Wheelock and T.J. St. Louis notched an assist each and Tim Post made 10 saves on 13 shots for the 6-7-1 Lakers.

Oakley Jackson scored the goal for 7-6 Vinalhaven. Nathan Hopkins made 17 saves on 26 shots.
