HOULTON – Houlton police are asking the public to keep their car doors shut and locked but their eyes and ears alert to any sign of the burglars who have been rifling through area cars over the past two weeks.
Houlton Police Department Special Investigator Eric Crouse said Friday that the vehicle burglaries began about two weeks ago and have continued since then. Although many streets in town have been hit, several burglaries have occurred on Court Street, Varney Avenue, Chandler Street and Park Street.
Police are not sure whether they are dealing with one person or a group of people in connection with the incidents. All of the cars that were burglarized had been left unlocked.
“I would say High Street has been hit the worst,” Crouse acknowledged. “These people [burglars] are basically just going around and checking [car] doors to see if they are open and what they can get.”
The investigator said that the thieves have been targeting items that are easy to carry, including compact discs, loose change, CD players and rings. One victim also lost a set of stereo speakers.
Police are asking everyone to keep their cars locked and to keep valuables in their vehicles hidden out of sight.
They are also asking residents to report anything out of the ordinary to police.
Anyone with information is asked to call Houlton police at 532-2287.
