MACHIAS – Fifty women learned about more healthful living Wednesday evening – and they didn’t have to go to the hospital to do it.
Professionals from Down East Community Hospital put together a free dinner-and-discussion event at the Bluebird Ranch Family Restaurant that packaged mingling time, a healthful meal and tips for better living.
Called “Ladies Night Out,” the event was well-received. Robin Popp, who coordinated the evening, said it’s likely the hospital will do similar events again.
The speakers were:
. Dr. Jenna Barna, the hospital’s new radiologist, on breast health, digital mammography and bone density testing.
. Dr. Kara Dwight, an obstetrician, speaking on contraception and surgical gynecological procedures.
. Christine Kuhni, a women’s health nurse practitioner at Milbridge Medical Center, speaking on menopause.
Most of the women in the room were over 40, as shown by a raising of hands. Many were well beyond that.
Kuhni’s suggestion that women “focus on the positive” in their lives drew a lively response from one of them.
“I’m older, and my life is full of positives,” she said. “I’m having a ball. I teach, I write, I travel. I don’t have to cope with a husband, and I have great kids who live away.”
Other women could relate, and the comment drew applause.
