News in brief NEWPORT: CULTURAL CENTER GETS GIFT FROM PUPIL

The Newport Cultural Center’s capital campaign is $507 richer after Olivia McAnirlin, a sixth-grader at Sebasticook Valley Middle School, donated the sum. Olivia ran her own read-a-thon this past summer, reading more than 30 books with a minimum of 150 pages each. She asked friends, family and the Gannett Foundation to sponsor her. By the time school started, she raised the money and earlier this month presented it to Newport librarian Leona McCartin. Olivia previously raised $120 for the center as a fourth-grader. On Oct. 11, she was given the “Cultured Kids Award” for her community service. The center is undertaking a $1.4 million campaign to raise money for a new facility to house the Newport Public Library and the Historical Society Museum. To date, more than $1.049 million has been raised.
