Two face charges in burglaries

VERONA ISLAND – Two men face charges in connection with a string of motor vehicle burglaries in Bucksport and Verona Island early Sunday morning.

Officers from the Waldo and Hancock county sheriff’s departments arrested Nathan Peters, 21, of Orrington and Clayton Burgess, 21, of Auburn on Sunday afternoon at a residence in Frankfort.

Both were charged with possession of stolen property. Burgess also was ordered to be held on a charge of violating probation.

The two men were taken to the Waldo County Jail. Peters was released Sunday on bail. Burgess was held on the probation violation and was transferred to the Androscoggin County Jail on Monday.

The charges stem from a string of about a dozen thefts from vehicles in Bucksport and Verona Island late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to Deputy Rob Morang of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Just one of the burglaries was in Bucksport, Morang said. The rest occurred in a number of different areas around the town of Verona Island, he said. In only one incident, the car burglary in Bucksport, was the vehicle broken into.

Items taken from the vehicles included tires, purses and a compact disc player.

Peters and Burgess could face additional charges pending a review of the case by the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office.
