I marvel at the various horror scenarios that are being presented to show what will happen if TABOR passes. Basically they all make the same point, namely, that if TABOR passes and governments try to continue spending as they have in the past – as if there were no TABOR – there will be problems. But of course!
The whole point of TABOR is to force governments to cut back their spending. Our government policy makers seem oblivious to our tax burden. Our governor plays a shell game by moving taxes from one place to another depending on who is complaining the loudest. And only in Maine is a budget called “balanced” when enough money is borrowed to cover expenditures that exceed revenue.
There is no doubt that TABOR is a meat ax being proposed to force cuts that should have been made with scalpels wielded by intelligent and responsible government officials. But those officials have ignored the problem. I think TABOR is the only way to get their attention.
