The town council approved the addition of a K-9 unit to the local police force at their meeting Monday night. Officer Derek Dinsmore paid out of pocket for the dog’s initial training, and the town hopes to receive grants for more extensive training in the future. “The dog is … mainly going to be used just for drug cases, and we’ll hopefully expand this to searching for people who’ve gotten away from us,” Dinsmore said Monday at the council meeting. Dinsmore also stated that the department had applied for a grant from the state this year for the dog’s training, which they did not receive. He stated that they hope to be approved for grant money in future years.
The council’s motion to approve the K-9 program passed unanimously.
