SEARSPORT – Left Bank Books has arranged for Pulitzer Prize-winning historian author Doris Kearns Goodwin to participate in a “virtual” signing of her latest book, “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.”

“Having spent my undergraduate years at Colby, I have fond memories of my time in Maine. Left Bank Books, this wonderful little Maine bookshop, was so excited, so patient and courteously persistent that, even though I couldn’t come up for a signing, I wanted to participate in some way,” Goodwin said.

Co-owner Marsha Kaplan said the long-distance signing was “the next best thing to an in-store signing, complete with in-store delivery!”

Customers simply order the books they’d like, with the inscriptions they’d like, and Goodwin will personally inscribe and sign a bookplate for each one. Specially designed bookplates have already been printed for the event. Orders will be taken through Tuesday, Oct. 31.

More than 10 years in the making, “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” ($35. hardcover, $19.95 paperback, Simon & Schuster) has won both the Lincoln Prize and the Book Prize for American History and was a National Book Critics’ Circle Award finalist.

It focuses on Lincoln’s relationship with three rivals who sought the Republican presidential nomination for himself in 1860, and were shocked to lose it to the nearly unknown Lincoln.

Not only will “Team of Rivals” be available for inscription, but all of Goodwin’s other books will be available, including “No Ordinary Time” ($18.95, S&S), “Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream” ($19.95, St. Martin’s Griffin) and her memoir, “Wait Till Next Year” ($15.00, S&S).
