Sleepy driver hurt in Greenbush crash

GREENBUSH – A Passadumkeag man was injured late Tuesday afternoon after he fell asleep at the wheel and the pickup truck he was driving left the road and struck some trees.

Lonnie Garland, 43, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after the accident on Route 2 near the U.S. Post Office branch, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Knights said Tuesday. Information about Garland’s condition wasn’t immediately available, but Knights said the injuries weren’t life-threatening.

Garland was still being evaluated at 10:30 p.m., according to a nursing supervisor.

The accident did demolish the 2002 GMC pickup truck that Garland was driving, according to the deputy.

Garland was wearing a seat belt and driving alone when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and left the road. He was taken to EMMC by Old Town Fire and Rescue ambulance.
