Police seek suspect in robbery

BANGOR – Police on Tuesday were looking for a man who robbed the Mt. Hope Variety Store, leaving with an undisclosed amount of money.

An investigator Tuesday released more details about Monday’s incident, including that the man brandished a hammer before demanding money from one of the clerks inside the store.

Investigators have come up with the name of an individual Detective Sgt. Paul Kenison would describe only as a “person of interest.” Kenison said detectives are trying to locate the man in order to question him.

Kenison said the man who robbed the convenience store was described as being between the ages of 30 and 50, of average height and weight, brown hair, clean-shaven and wearing bluejeans and a dark or gray jacket.

The man entered the store at 1:40 p.m. and initially pretended to make a purchase, Kenison said. Then the man brandished a hammer, demanding money from a clerk. An undisclosed amount of money was placed in a bag and the man left the store on foot, heading down Mount Hope Avenue.

There were two male clerks in the store at the time. Neither was injured.

Kenison said anyone with information may contact him at 947-7382, ext. 252.
