PORTLAND – A search was under way Tuesday evening off southern Maine’s coast for a 55-year-old man who was last seen a day earlier, the Coast Guard said.
Searchers were looking for information from anyone who may have seen Robert Gilsey since he left Portland around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Gilsey was en route to his home on Great Diamond Island, but it appears he never arrived, Coast Guard Ensign Ben Crowell said.
Gilsey’s 23-foot motorboat was found adrift in Portland Harbor, with the keys in the ignition and the throttle open. Searchers believe the boat was under way for a time with Gilsey aboard, but he was not aboard when his boat was found, Crowell said.
A search began around midday Tuesday. A helicopter and two boats each from the Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol were searching for Gilsey.
A Coast Guard cutter was also en route to the search area, in Portland Harbor south to the Cape Elizabeth area, Crowell said.
