Vandalism reported again at Dedham cemetery

DEDHAM – For the second time in less than a week, a cemetery in Hancock County has been vandalized.

The latest incident happened late Friday or early Saturday, police believe, at the Brookside Cemetery on South Road in Dedham.

“I’m not absolutely sure when it happened, I just found out about it,” said Patricia Miller, who lives nearby and is involved with the cemetery association. “It looks like most were just pushed over, but a couple were actually broken.”

A report at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 26 gravestones at the private cemetery were damaged. A deputy has been assigned to investigate the case, but he did not return a call Monday for comment.

Most of the gravestones in Dedham dated back to the 1800s, Miller said. She hopes the incident was kids horsing around rather than a bigger problem.

Last week, vandals knocked over several gravestones at Mountainview Cemetery in Blue Hill. The town announced shortly afterward that it would give a reward of $500 to anyone with information that led to an arrest. So far, nothing has turned up.

Miller said she isn’t keeping her fingers crossed that any information will surface as far as Dedham is concerned.

“This is the first time I can remember anything like this happening,” she said. “I’m sure we’re not high on the priority list, but someone must have seen something.”

Anyone with information about the vandalism at the Dedham cemetery can contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office at 667-7575.
