Milo woman escapes injury in crash, fire

MILO – A local woman escaped with bruises Monday after she lost control of her vehicle and struck a utility pole on Elm Street.

Wendy Stevens, 38, managed to get out of her 1998 Dodge Neon before utility wires dropped to the ground and ignited the surrounding grass, setting the vehicle on fire, according to Milo police Officer Terry Smith.

Stevens told Smith she had been reaching for a cup of coffee when she lost control of her westbound vehicle and struck the pole. The utility pole was broken in the accident, which resulted in a power outage in the region for about an hour, he said.

The officer said Stevens declined medical treatment when Three Rivers Ambulance responded to the call at about 11:30 a.m. Stevens was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred, he said.

“She was lucky she got out of the car [before the fire erupted],” Milo Police Chief Michael Poulin said Monday.

Poulin said the pole held a transformer, and the transformer and pole landed on the hood of Stevens’ vehicle. In addition to the grass, the power lines also set fire to a nearby wooded section, Poulin said.

Milo firefighters extinguished the blaze, the chief said. Brownville police assisted Milo police with traffic control.

Stevens’ vehicle was demolished.
