Bar Harbor man escapes from police

BAR HARBOR – Local police are on the lookout for a man whom they arrested Friday only to have him slip through their fingers.

Or, to be more precise, he slipped through an unlocked window at the police station when no one was looking.

Bar Harbor police pulled over a vehicle driven by William Sanford, 21, of Bar Harbor on Friday afternoon when an officer saw Sanford drive past a pedestrian in a crosswalk by the town pier, police said Monday. He was found to be operating a motor vehicle after suspension and to have violated bail conditions, police said, and so was arrested and taken to the local police station for processing.

Two hours later, police left Sanford alone in a ground-floor room while they got ready to take him to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth. That’s when Sanford allegedly opened a window, popped the screen out and ran off, police said.

Anyone with information about Sanford’s whereabouts may contact the Bar Harbor Police Department at 288-3391.
