Police: Bangor fire not tied to others

BANGOR – Though it marked the fifth in Maine so far this week, a barn fire on Thursday night on Essex Street is not thought to be related to the others.

“We have no reason to believe they are connected at this time,” Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr said Friday.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating three barn fires in Albion and one in Dedham.

So far, investigators have determined that the second Albion fire, which occurred Tuesday, was intentionally set, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday.

He said the cause of the first Albion fire, which happened Monday, cannot be determined because the site was bulldozed before fire marshal’s staff could investigate.

The cause of the third fire in Albion, reported Thursday, remains under investigation, he said.

He said the Dedham is not believed to be linked to those in Albion.

No one has been hurt in any of the fires, according to authorities.

McCausland said state fire investigators have not linked the fire at 1479 Essex St., Bangor, to the others.

According to Cyr, firefighters were called to Essex Street to put out a barn fire about 10:48 p.m., but when they arrived, they found the barn engulfed in flames.

The Bangor Fire Department had all of its crews at the fire scene, as well as tanker trucks from Glenburn and the Maine Air National Guard Base in Bangor, Cyr said. He said the tankers were needed because there are no hydrants on outer Essex Street.

The Brewer Fire Department provided coverage in Bangor during the fire, under the auspices of a mutual aid agreement.

Firefighters, however, were able to save a vacant house about 30 feet away owned by Ellen Severance.

The fire marshal’s office visited the scene Friday, but a cause for the fire has yet to be determined.

A dollar amount for the loss was not available Friday, nor was information about whether the barn was insured, Cyr said.
