FRANKLIN – Five people escaped unharmed from an early morning fire Wednesday that destroyed a home on Eastbrook Road.
The fire was reported just before 4:30 a.m. By the time officials arrived, flames were coming out the roof, Franklin Fire Chief Robert Grindle said later Wednesday.
“Once we realized all the people got out safely, it didn’t make sense to go in there and try to fight it,” Grindle said. “They were lucky to get out safely.”
The fire caused significant damage to the home, which is owned by Jeff Crabtree but is rented by his nephew, the chief said. It wasn’t clear whether the four others lived there or not.
Grindle said the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate, but he didn’t think the fire appeared suspicious.
The chief said the fire likely started in the living room, but he added there was probably too much damage to determine a cause.
The homeowner did not have insurance, Grindle said, nor did the renters.
Firefighters from Franklin, Sullivan, Hancock, Waltham and Eastbrook spent several hours at the scene containing the flames.
